Another public reading

I will read something tonight at the WSU English Faculty Open Mic night, at Brused Books in Pullman, WA, from 18:00-19:00. Maybe I’ll read my new short story “Redletterjacket”, or perhaps a collection of poems on the transience of parenthood.

Public reading

Tomorrow I’ll give a public reading of “Interview with a Trout,” “The Goddess Bastet,” and “The Points” at the Latah County Library in Moscow, Idaho, sometime between 18:00 and 20:00. It’s my first public reading!

Short Story to appear in Jersey Devil Press

“Interview with a Trout at a Sidewalk Cafe in Amsterdam,” a 720 word surreal meditation on mortality, Just appeared in the April 2025, issue 128, of Jersey Devil Press (https://www.jerseydevilpress.com/?page_id=8984). Amazingly, they accepted the story less than two weeks after I finished it!

Lots of submissions

I just submitted several poems and short stories. Since I stopped worrying about finding an agent for “To Bury Lilly” my productivity has been explosive. See the blog for why I (temporarily) stopped looking for an agent, and “Current Projects” in the top menu to see what I’ve been up to.

“Now You See Me” (short story) published in Synkroniciti

NOW YOU SEE ME was featured in Synkroniciti Magazine, Volume 7, Number 1, 5 March 2025 (Katherine McDaniel, Editor), a special issue on “Identiy”. The issue includes lovely artwork and author profiles. Support independent small presses by purchasing a copy: click here. Katherine McDaniel wrote a very kind and perceptive introduction to the story.  One cool […]

“Now You See Me” (short story) short-listed again

Synkroniciti (a very nice literary magazine) short listed my short story NOW YOU SEE ME, but passed on it in the end. That’s the fourth award this (still unpublished, debut) short story has won. Hey, world: you’re missing something special here. NOTE: Synkronicity published a re-written version (see News). World, show your gratitude to Synkroniciti!

To bury “The Second One” (novel)

I have decided to rename my first novel. Originally, it was THE SECOND ONE. I had hoped the reader would want to know who or what was the first and second ones, and that would engage their interest. There were lots of hints and misdirection in the text. Is it the second daughter? The second […]

“Memorial” (Poem) published in Bowery Gothic

My poem MEMORIAL has been published in Bowery Gothic! See the poem here. This was a lot of fun to write. The poet Bill Collins, at the Kauai Writers Conference in 2023, suggested that poets look into the “voids” between things and actions for inspiration. So what’s the biggest void of all? The world with […]

Two submissions to regional contests

I have submitted my novel THE SECOND ONE and my short story NOW YOU SEE ME to the “unpublished authors” contests for the Pacific Northwest Writers Association, the main general writing group for my geographic area. I am a member, too, and recommend it to anyone in the Pacific (or Inland) Northwest!
